Outside Looking In

As the thoughts grow louder,
The world becomes muted.
Light is a distant memory
You can’t quite remember.
Did it ever exist?
The faintest glimmer
Must be a delusion of your mind.

The dark.
No.
The void.
The fog of nothingness
Is all there is.
All there ever will be.
It turns rainbows into grayscale,
Ambrosia into sand,
Music into silence,
Seconds into eternity.

My heart sinks.
Every time.
The tears I want to shed for you
Never come.
The desperation is too deep for tears.
I’m outside looking in.
I want to help.
Tell me how to help.
I can’t.
There’s nothing I can do.

All I can offer is my love.
All I can offer is my everything.
But I know.
I always know.
It’s not enough.
Nothing ever is.

I know you don’t believe me.
You never do.
But it’s true.
Despite you or me.
There is hope.

Behind the blackest clouds,
The sun is radiating.
On the darkest nights,
Galaxies of stars are shining.
Even when we can’t feel its warmth,
There is always light.

My Students - Inspiration
Imogen is a character.
Imogen is not me.
Imogen is not friends I had in high school.
Imogen is not my former, present, or future students.
But I could never have written Imogen without the teenagers that shaped my life—both in my own youth and in adulthood.
I didn’t know that teaching would become my career. I wasn’t a person that went to college to become a teacher on the day they graduated from high school. But once I found teaching, I also found a part of myself that I didn’t know hadn’t been fulfilled.
Teaching is about patience, listening, giving…
But more than all that, teaching is about connecting with young people and being there in that single moment that defines them day after day, year after year.
Being there for you, students, during good times and bad. Pass or fail. Academia and the real world. You’ve shown me the value of supporting you, as best as I can in every moment possible.
The moment when you’re 12 and the first person you’ve ever liked holds your hand.
The moment when you’re 13 and you think you’ll actually die from so much crying.
The moment when you’re 14 and your best friend has decided to sit beside someone else.
The moment you’re 15 and you decide that you’re going to ask for the help you need without your mom making you.
The moment when you’re 16 and you realize that you’re actually kinda awesome at math.
The moment you’re 17 and you make a mistake you’re sure you can never, ever undo.
The moment you’re 18 and you realize that we’re not comprised of a single choice, but we’re shaped by each and every one.
I have worked, over my 9 year career, with students who live and fight daily against depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, learning exceptionalities, suicidal thoughts, self harm, addiction, and a ton of other things society would like to quarantine.
But those same students are the people who regularly teach me about strength, honor, forgiveness, perseverance, patience, and growth.
I have learned more from my students than I EVER could have shown them.
I wrote this book for them. The sad ones. The happy ones. The ones who made A’s and the ones who dropped out.
I’m proud to have known each one of you.
Thank you for teaching me.
Mrs. Macke loves you.
